Ramadan ~ 3,4

This took two days, partly because it's been a little crazy around here and partly because paint needed to dry. Anyway, we were watching a video about Ramadan and this project was in there. We still need to add sand to the ground and will do that this afternoon. I'm trying not to push to get things done and just let it go naturally and smoothly because there have been some trying days around here lately. LD is turning four right around Eid and I have a strange feeling that four is going to be tough but i digress. Here's our mosque diorama.

If you want instructions on anything let me know...most is self explanatory in the pictures.

Ramadan ~ 3

Today our activity was to round up donations for charity. Outgrown clothes, not played with enough toys, etc. Looked through the cabinets for things we won't use for the foodbank also. Cleaned house.

Sorry, nothing too fancy today, but important nonetheless. Back tomorrow with a new craft.

Here's the flickr group.

Ramadan 2 ~ Contact Paper watercolor

For this project we first took a white crayon and wrote the word Allah in the white crayon and then painted over it. It was supposed to not show up on the white part but it did. Then i thought to do contact paper. So, i wrote Allah in Arabic on the back of the contact paper and cut it out only to realize it was backwards (so don't do that if you do this). Third try finally worked. I really like the way it turned out. I asked him to stick to one color for this project. I'll mat it with construction paper and hang it in his playroom. Pictures stink because i didn't take them until tonight. We had a little emergency room visit today. Boys are scary creatures. Mine should stop running backwards immediately. Anyway, here's how ours turned out.

Ramadan 2

I realize my Arabic stinks but after the third attempt of cutting it out of contact paper, we were both losing steam so i let it be.

I'm going to do a flickr group for this blog so you guys can post your projects if you do any of these. I'd love to see what you make with your little ones (and bigger ones too).

Welcome Ramadan Banner

DSC00796

I kept this simple so my son could do most of the work himself. I cut the paper and wrote the letters with glue and he pretty much did the rest. I strung the letters with string while he "washed" the dishes.

Since hanging this in a prominant part of the house (he wanted it in the playroom, i wanted it in the living area). Usually i go with what he wants but as I told him, I want it to be a reminder to us throughout the whole day and since we spend most of our time in our living area, we would hang it there and then make another version for the playroom.

Since making it he is asking about Ramadan. What it means, why we do it, and he is repeating the word to his sister excitedly. Goal one achieved. A word gains meaning, excitement for a month of spiritual renewal and growth begun.

You could do this several ways. We like glitter and glue. I do mean we. :-)

Welcome!

Now that my son is getting to be an age where he is understanding concepts and not just words, I'm starting to teach him Islam. This site will be a craft site for the month of Ramadan. 30 days for kids to celebrate in little ways but will give them concepts and ideas and starting points for discussions through arts and crafts. If you are interested in submitting an idea, please let me know. I hope you find this site useful. Enjoy insh'Allah.
